People come to coaching for different reasons.  For many, there is simply a desire to be in a better mental or emotional space or a hope to move ahead in their relationships, career, or other important areas of life.  Sometimes a client has a particular issue to resolve or some kind of pressing decision that needs to be made.  Still others come to coaching confused, angry or frustrated and unable to say much more than, “I can’t do this anymore” or “something has to change”. (To which I say, “Good. Let’s get moving!)

So, what exactly is Coaching? The International Coaching Federation would say that it is:

a partnership with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership.

Although coaching differs from traditional therapy or counseling, clients will often engage in coaching to enhance their counseling experience and practice putting into action the things they have learned about themselves or their past in therapy. 

In coaching we will:

  1. Speak honestly about the situations and relationships that are causing you pain.

  2. Evaluate the source of the discomfort or imbalance based on your own personal values and expectations.

  3. Look at every possible option that is healthy and has the potential to bring long-lasting change.

  4. Work together to implement change using your own strengths, effective tools, role playing, and adding additional resources as needed.

  5. Repeat.
